Yoho NP & Golden: Travel Highlights

local love out & about travel

Hey all! We hope your Summer is going well so far. Here are a few highlights from Leah's July Long family trip to Yoho and Golden, BC.

Yoho National Park

Yoho is such a treasure of a National Park. It's the smallest of the 4 adjoining parks (Kootenay, Jasper, and Banff) and its quaintness and general calm, compared to the often complete craziness of Banff, was perfect for a side trip from Golden. When travelling with 2 toddlers, it's nice to have a place where you can pack in a number of scenic views and hikes in a short amount of time. Yoho was great for that. We enjoyed a hike around Emerald Lake, a picnic lunch, and checked out the Natural Bridge. Yoho is worth travelling to if only to take in the intoxicating colour of Emerald Lake alone. Mother Nature outdid herself here!

...And then, I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?

We had an amazing long weekend in the town of Golden. We were lucky enough to stay right at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort which allowed us to get in a couple of trips up the mountain and take in the sites in between the weekend's rain storms. A huge thanks to KHMR and RCR for our lift passes to go visit Boo the bear (Exclusive 'Boo Blog' coming soon!) The kids were totally fascinated, and hey, so were the adults.

We also made the longer gondola trip to the very top of Kicking Horse. While the rain had completely cleared down below, the top of the mountain was like a whole other world. The temperatures were substantially cooler, and yep, there was snow flying! The views were breathtaking and we were treated to some free entertainment on the way down. We watched mountain bikers show off their vertical skills as they skidded down the wet trails and we also caught Boo directly below us enjoying play time in his pond!

Shout out to the Grizzly Bear Refuge tour guides and all the KHMR lift attendants. Honestly, some of the friendliest and enthusiastic people around. Where can I apply!?

Our hotel had a hot tub which ended up being the perfect retreat when the rain was coming down. On Sunday, just before noon, the clouds parted and the sun shone for Canada Day. We spent the entire day outside simply enjoying the outdoors and playing below the mountains. No complaints.

We ate and drank well and would recommend the following:

Coffee - Double Black at Kicking Horse Resort
Good coffee (Kicking Horse), super yummy flat bread pizzas (try the Kale & Chorizo!) and friendly service.
Dinner - Bears Den Burger Bar
Tons of fun burger options, big portions, Fernie Brewing Co. on tap and very kid friendly! Try the Elk Burger if you're game ;)
Happy Hour - Whitetooth Brewery
We picked up a couple of brews from Whitetooth and we totally regret not getting more! We've been fans of their slick branding for awhile (design nerds here) and the beer didn't disappoint. We recommend the Thread the Needle Witbier, a unique taste with coriander, szechuan pepper and lemongrass that's real easy going down.

We couldn't think of a better place to spend Canada 151. Cheers to you Golden!
